Foster
Our foster homes are a big part of High Country Basset Hound Rescue. The more foster homes we have, the more Bassets we are able to save, re-home, and avoid premature euthanasia.
We are 100% foster based, which means that every Basset we take in goes directly to one of our loving foster homes where they transition as part of the family, NOT A KENNEL.
Our foster parents provide love, stability, patience, and help their fosters adjust to their surroundings. They also provide the basic needs of food, shelter, exercise, and a fenced secure yard. Our fosters are an important part of the evaluation process so we are able to find the best match in a permanent home.
There is no magic calculation for how long you might have your foster. It could be 1 week or it could be several months, so we ask that you are willing to make the commitment for your foster. Generally speaking, younger bassets are adopted faster, but please don't let that discourage you from fostering a senior. You would be amazed at the rewards that come with fostering a senior hound. We tend to see a decrease in adoptions around major holidays. Families are traveling more and have more household stress. The more information you can provide about your foster and the more pictures/videos we can post on social media and our website, the faster your foster will find a fur-ever home.
So many times it can be difficult to give up your foster. Try to remember why you are fostering and the next foster that comes to you will need your love and guidance just as the previous one did. However, if you decided to keep your foster, you always have first right as the foster home.
Fostering is a satisfying and rewarding experience. You will be making a difference in the lives of these homeless hounds.

Senior Bassets
As owner care and medical science improve, our furry four legged family are living longer, healthy, happy, lives. So when do we consider a Basset Hound a senior? The average life span of a Basset Hound is 12 years old and we consider senior age to be 8. The most common reasons we see owners giving up a senior Basset are: unable to afford vet care as aging dogs often require more frequent vet visits and medication for common senior ailments; an aging owner unable to care for the dog; the family's children have grown and the parents want to travel; the family adopts a puppy and the senior dog isn't happy; the senior dog isn't "fun" anymore, so is traded in for a puppy; and divorce.
Sadly, senior dogs are among the first to be euthanized at shelters. Not everyone appreciates all the wonderful things these gray-muzzled companions bring to our lives. That's why YOU are so important!!! |
