Why adopt? Advantages and Disadvantages
Basset rescue groups are devoted to finding homes for Basset Hounds that have been abandoned or given up by their owners. Many of these Bassets end up at local humane shelters and unless suitable foster or permanent homes are found for these animals, they are destroyed.

Advantages of adopting a Basset rescue dog:
- Many people find joy and pleasure in giving a "new home" to a dog that was deserted by its former owner. Rescue groups are experienced at assessing whether a particular Basset is a good candidate for adoption.
- Most Basset rescue dogs are adults and many are already housebroken as well as spayed/neutered.
- Rescue dogs are often an alternative for loving family who truly wants a Basset Hound but many not be able to afford the price of a new puppy from a breeder.
- In some cases, rescued Bassets have been abused and severely mistreated by their former owners. The adoptive family may therefore need to be especially understanding and spend some time helping their new friend fit into its new home. Many rescue Bassets may be timid or shy until they have a chance to adapt to their new surroundings. With love and patience, most of these Bassets blossom into endearing pets. What is the age criteria for adopting families with children?
We here at HCBHR love children; however, we will only adopt to families whose children are five years and younger on a case by case basis. Please don't let this discourage your choice in submutting an application to adopt a Basset Hound, as most basset's are great with children. We just want to make sure the basset you are getting is a good fit for your family and the adoptable hound.

Does HCBHR spay and neuter their rescues?
Rescued Bassets are spayed and neutered before being placed up for adoption. HCBHR's sole responsibility is to find unwanted Basset Hounds loving homes, not to help create MORE unwanted or neglected puppies.

What type of evaluation is done with the rescue dogs?
Rescue Bassets are placed in a family situation with foster families. This enables HCBHR members to evaluate a "rescue" dogs behavior, temperament, and characteristics in order to place them in the correct home that will aid and benefit both the rescue dog and its adopting family. Many times a basset is placed in an adopting home as a "Foster to Adopt" situation. This helps eliminate unnecessary moving of the dog when we have an adoptive family that is all ready for adoption and the rescue feels the dog is a great fit for that family.

Do Basset Hounds require much exercise?
Basset Hounds don't need to run for miles, but they do need regular exercise. Basset Hounds that don't get enough exercise become obese, which puts stress on their bones and joints and causes more health problems. Bassets MUST have regular opportunities to stretch their legs and vent their energy to remain healthy and fit. Bassets cannot be trusted off-leash as they will take off with every chance they get. THEY FOLLOW THEIR NOSE WHEREVER IT GOES.
